Postgraduate Certificate in the Clinical Management of Dental Anxiety

This Postgraduate Certificate is designed to widen access to education and training in the management of the patient with dental anxiety for the dental profession in Scotland. It proposes to offer high quality and validated training in evidenced-based interventions for dental anxiety. The philosophy underlying this proposal is to improve standards of clinical practice by increasing the treatment options available for managing dental anxiety as well as ensuring competent delivery of treatment.

This Postgraduate Certificate programme offers flexibility through modular part-time study. This means that continuing professional development and/or other higher training needs can be progressed in a recognised fashion.

Each module has its own specific aims, learning outcomes and performance criteria. The aims and objectives parallel those in the existing Masters’ degrees in the Postgraduate Dental Institute.

The course is aimed at dentists working in Primary and Secondary Care who have at least two years post qualification experience. Candidates must be graduates in dental surgery of the University of Edinburgh or hold corresponding degrees or diplomas of another licensing body that are acceptable for registration with the General Dental Council in the United Kingdom. The course is only available to part-time students.

Students would not be expected to study more than two modules in any academic year and may find it easier to complete one each academic year. Completion of three modules (60 credits) will lead to the award of Postgraduate Certificate from the University of Edinburgh. Modules 1 and 4 are compulsory.
