Taught MClin Dent / MSc Degree programmes in Clinical Dental Disciplines
Master of Clinical Dentistry degree programmes of the University of Edinburgh are offered in the following subjects:
| Oral Medicine | |||
| Orthodontics | |||
| Paediatric Dentistry | |||
| Prosthodontics | |||
| Surgical Dentistry |
The University of Edinburgh offers a Master of Science degree programme in Dental Primary Care.
The degrees in Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Surgical Dentistry are intended to form part of Specialist Training as originally envisaged by the Chief Dental Officer for England and Wales. The regulations and requirements for Specialist Training are comprehensively described in “Specialisation – a practical guide” published by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Candidates for degrees who additionally wish to gain admission to one of the Specialist Registers must be aware of the entry, training and exit requirements for their chosen specialty. Acceptance on a university degree programme does not imply acceptance into specialist training. We will be happy to discuss your career aims and objectives with you.
We would normally expect candidates to have been qualified for a minimum of two years before starting their postgraduate studies for a Masters degree. Earlier applications can be considered but the requirements of two years experience before commencing specialist training is something that we support and wish to apply to all dentists beginning formal postgraduate study.
These MClin Dent degree programmes require that you attend over two years full-time or three years part-time to allow completion of the clinical component associated with the degree programme. These are all strongly clinically orientated degree programmes. As part of a small group of dentists in each programme, you will receive personal teaching with emphasis placed on an evidence-based approach to clinical-practice.For full time attendees, there is a written examination during September
of the first year. This must be passed to enable candidates to continue to
the second year. There is a further written examination in June of the second
year together with a clinical assessment and viva voce. The research dissertation
of 15,000 - 20,000 words must be completed by the end of August of the second
year and is defended at a viva voce examination in September.
Dental Primary Care
This MSc. Degree is designed with the busy dental
practitioner in mind. We recognise that many dentists are unable to commit
to the full-time nature
of many traditional Master’s degree programmes. The University of Edinburgh
has, in response to this, approved a Modular MSc. Degree in Dental Primary
Care, which can be completed by intermittent study over as long as six years,
if necessary. It requires limited attendance at the Postgraduate Dental Institute
and contains elements of distance learning and distance clinical practice. Click here for further details of this unique Dental Masters degree.
Postgraduate Certificate in the Clinical Management of Dental Anxiety
The University of Edinburgh has developed modular degree courses available
by intermittent study. This allows the busy professional to access University
education without having to commit to full time study. The Clinical Management
of Dental Anxiety is a subject well suited to this type of degree course and
has been designed in easily accessible modules with the busy primary care practitioner
in mind. The philosophy behind the course is to make sure that dentists receive
training in all aspects of the management of dental anxiety so that patients
receive the highest quality of care. Both the psychological aspects and the
pharmacological management of patients are balanced in this respect. The course
has the support of NHS Scotland both in its development and financially. Click
